I think comparing ourselves to others is pretty natural. I see my kids do it with each other and with their contemporaries…Archie tries to hit harder and better than his friends at tennis. Martha asks if she can get the same swimming costume / shoes / coat as her friend Lucy. Mabel just wants whatever her brother or sister have and Continue reading “Stick or Twist?”
Be Kind, Always.
I saw this on Facebook over the weekend and I thought it was lovely:
I come from a kind family. Continue reading “Be Kind, Always.”
A word from my dad….
I would like to thank the elder of our two daughters for all the very touching things
she has said about me in her latest chapter of “Life after Alzheimer’s”. Perhaps one or two corrections need to be made….. Continue reading “A word from my dad….”
Best Before….
My dad has never adhered to use-by dates. He knew we were arriving a few days ago and he filled the fridge with yogurts for the kids, sausages for their tea, vegetables for me to make some home-made soup and extra bread for our toast at breakfast. All of these newly bought items have an “Oops” sticker on. Continue reading “Best Before….”
A Toilet Stop!
I drove up last night, with all 3 kids, in what turned into a bloody stressful journey. Mabel needed a poo as soon as we set off (“it’s coming out, Mummy!), but seen as we were on the A1 there was nothing I could do but ask her to hang on. Continue reading “A Toilet Stop!”
What’s in a message?
I have been genuinely overwhelmed by the lovely messages and comments from friends, friends of friends and complete strangers who have read my blog. It has surprised me that so many people care. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I knew the “definites” – the people who would take the time to read my blog and send me encouraging words and messages (you know who you are girls!), but, I didn’t think my stories would spread so far, would wing their way around the globe so effortlessly. Continue reading “What’s in a message?”
The Last Times
I met up with a good friend this morning and we exercised the kids (I lost two of mine temporarily – found them just before the point when full blown panic sets in) around Harlow Carr Gardens. Continue reading “The Last Times”
Introducing…..my dad!
When I first started thinking about writing a blog about Alzheimer’s and Dementia and my poor mum, one of my worries was my dad. How would he take it? Would he be upset about our private family problems being published to friends, family and even strangers? Would he be cross with me for sharing my darkest thoughts and my deepest fears? Would he be angry or upset about me sharing my mum’s new and constantly changing vulnerabilities? Continue reading “Introducing…..my dad!”
Walkies!
We love a walk, our family. Come sunshine, rain, wind, sleet or snow we have always got wrapped up warm and ventured out for some fresh air. I think it’s good for the soul, or at least that’s what has been drummed into me all my life by my ridiculously active parents.
The Wisdom of a Child
There wasn’t really one event, or one conversation that triggered alarm bells. It was a gradual awareness that something was wrong…
